What we look at together
Tell us where symptoms travel, whether you have numbness or weakness, and what changes them. Your history and examination help distinguish a spinal nerve problem from other causes of leg pain. Previous imaging can be useful but must match the clinical picture.
Options to discuss
Conservative care may involve activity modification, graded exercise and selected manual treatment. Some people need medical management or specialist review. Decompression is not guaranteed to relieve a compressed nerve, and traction is not recommended by NICE for low-back pain with sciatica.
When to seek medical care
New bladder or bowel dysfunction, saddle numbness or severe or worsening weakness in both legs needs emergency evaluation. New or progressive weakness in one leg also needs prompt assessment.
Make the visit useful
Bring relevant reports, a medication list and a description of the activities that are difficult. At our Bloomington office, ask how the findings connect to your goals, what alternatives exist and when progress will be reviewed. You should understand both the proposed care and its cost before deciding.
A change in symptoms or lack of meaningful improvement is a reason to reassess. Care may involve a medical referral or collaboration with another clinician. This guide cannot determine the cause of your symptoms.

- Rehabilitative exercises — Build capacity for the things you want to do.
A common question
Does all leg pain mean sciatica?
No. Hip, muscle, circulation and other problems can cause leg symptoms. An examination is important before choosing treatment.
