What we look at together
Tell us whether pain is in the groin, outer hip or buttock, and how walking, stairs or lying on the side affect it. We consider mobility, strength and possible back-related symptoms. A fall or inability to bear weight changes the urgency of evaluation.
Options to discuss
When suitable, progressive exercise and changes to aggravating activities may support function. Selected manual care may be considered, but not every hip complaint calls for an adjustment. Persistent symptoms or suspected joint disease may need medical assessment.
When to seek medical care
Inability to bear weight after a fall, severe sudden pain, fever or a hot swollen joint needs prompt medical care. New neurological symptoms should also be evaluated.
Make the visit useful
Bring relevant reports, a medication list and a description of the activities that are difficult. At our Bloomington office, ask how the findings connect to your goals, what alternatives exist and when progress will be reviewed. You should understand both the proposed care and its cost before deciding.
A change in symptoms or lack of meaningful improvement is a reason to reassess. Care may involve a medical referral or collaboration with another clinician. This guide cannot determine the cause of your symptoms.
Care to explore
- Chiropractic care — Hands-on care, guided by your goals.
- Rehabilitative exercises — Build capacity for the things you want to do.
A common question
Could my hip pain come from my back?
Sometimes. Similar locations can have different causes, which is why an examination is more useful than choosing treatment based on pain location alone.
